On behalf of Deaf Lawyers UK, Alison and I would like to apologise for the lack of posts over the last few months. Ok, I’ll rephrase that. The lack of posts over the last year.
There are a number of issues and personal developments that we would like to bring to the Deaf and Deaf legal community, so watch this space.
issue
Court hearing: Southport Magistrate Court
Access to interpreter: not booked
Deaf Client attended was not reimbursed travel cost but all solicitors and witness was. This had happened three times.
Is this a fair and just practice in that the court was incompetence in organising the booking of interpreters moreover complaint was made by client to usher who inform the client that because he is a (what label do they give to those who is up for a hearing not found guilty but questioned to be so).
I tried to flag this up with the law society and because I am only a lay person this was not responded and I get frustrated to know that we have deaf advisors in the system not feeding back this issue/s
Have this happened to anyone and the matter resolved if so how and in what way can this be addressed.
The client solicitor would not represent this issues and as per usual lacks deaf awareness saying it is the court that at fault for this.
I had a de ja vue with a sense of how powerless deafies are made to feel in trying to highlight this matter with all concerns and now i have found this site maybe this is the gateway to let you all know what is happening and to help us to address it correctly.
I was so shocked at what when on trying to help the client and found the system solicitors, court, probation and the prison services stinks lacking the DDA and Human Right impact its bode useless for us.
Sorry if this sound a negative have a go but I am so sad for the client the way this went about.
Best and enjoy
